Sunrise hike to Angel's Rest

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

The lovely thing about winter is that catching sunrise views is so much more manageable because it's so much later. Of course, you have to navigate around weather. So when I spotted a sunny morning on the horizon, I convinced two good friends to climb up to Angel's Rest with me.

We hopped on the road at 6am, with the goal of making it to the top by sunrise at 7:40am. Portland was thick with fog when we left, but as we got to the Gorge the air totally opened up and we were treated with some divine views.

The path to the top was blessedly calm, but we got absolutely blasted by wind at the very top. RIP to Liz's hat and my lens hood, which now live somewhere near the trail but out of reach.

The wind still made for some beautiful candid shots. I wasn't sure how they would turn out since my eyes were closed half the time, but my trusty Sony managed to capture a few windblown glamour shots all on its own.

On the way down, we paused for more organized portrait photos (phew).

On the way back, we stopped by Olympia Provisions for their Alpine-themed fare and beautiful outdoor seating.
